How to tune by ear and by needle
- Pluck one string at a time and let it ring. The reading is steadiest a moment after the pluck, once the attack settles.
- Tune up to the note. If you go sharp, drop below it and come back up: the string holds its pitch better that way.
- Watch the strobe. The faster the bars slide, the further off you are; when they stand still, you're there.
- Tuning one string pulls a little on the others, so go round a second time. A string that drifts loses its green mark.
- No microphone? Tap a peg, listen, and turn your string until the two notes stop wobbling against each other.
