Brown, pink or white noise: what's the difference?

White noise has the same energy at every pitch, so it sounds bright and hissy, like a TV between channels. It covers sudden sounds well but some people find it sharp.

Pink noise loses a little energy with each step up in pitch. It sounds even to the ear, like steady rain or wind in leaves, and it's the kind most sleep research has played to people.

Brown noise drops off faster still, leaving a deep rumble like a waterfall or a jet cabin. Lots of people find it the easiest to fall asleep to, and it pairs well with rain.

The other layers are built the same way, from noise shaped to match the real thing: thousands of drops for rain, the blades and motor of a fan, swells that build and wash back, wood that crackles and pops, and thunder that rolls in a few seconds after the flash.
